BIOGRAPHY | ALAN ADAMS
Born in London in 1967, now living and working in Exeter, Devon UK.
I have always loved art, loved creating but have only in the last 10 years or so had the time and opportunity to concentrate on the subjects that have always interested me. British military history and particularly the Napoleonic and Zulu War periods have always fascinated me, possibly because of the vivid colours and scale of the land and naval engagements.
Although I studied art in school and college, I do consider myself mostly self-taught as I don’t ever recall being taught or tutored in how to paint a man-of-war at sea!
Nelson’s navy and the ships of the line have become my mainstay commission work over recent years, always dramatic and with plenty of detail to study and paint. I predominately use oils for most of my work because I like the way how the light goes into the paint and something can seem to glow even when it is dry.
Commissions are always undertaken, most subjects can be achieved, except family portraits because I leave that to the professionals!
